Andrée Putman founded Ecart in 1978 and reissued forgotten French modernist furniture by Eileen Gray, Mariano Fortuny, and Pierre Chareau. She decorated Morgans Hotel in New York in 1984 — black-and-white checkerboard bathrooms, slate-gray walls — launching the boutique-hotel category.
